A sparse representation method for determining the optimal illumination directions in Photometric Stereo

چکیده
The analysis of surface and texture details with the help of changes in illumination direction is a key task in 3D shape reconstruction either based on Photometric Stereo, Shape from Shading or Structured Light. This paper presents a novel approach for estimating the optimal illumination directions for the accurate calculation of the surface normals, while minimising the presence of shadows and the reconstructed albedo error. The method regards a sparse representation of the illumination arrangement and estimates the light directions using l1 optimisation. The Lambertian model is considered and the theoretical development is demonstrated with experimental results. & 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Illumination Invariant Face Recognition Using Photometric Stereo
In this paper, we propose an elegant approach for illumination invariant face recognition based on the photometric stereo technique. The basic idea is to reconstruct the surface normal and the albedo of a face using photometric stereo images, and then use them as the illumination independent model of the face. And, we have investigated the optimal light source directions for accurate surface sh...
متن کاملCoherent Texture Synthesis for Photograph Relighting and Texture Replacement
In this thesis, we present a texture synthesis method for realistic rendering without acquiring the actual reflectance properties. The method is from the observation that most objects have texture repeatedly laid on different locations of their surface explicitly or implicitly. These samples form a pretty sparse set of BTFs. Our goal is to extract the underlying texture from photographs of the ...
متن کاملPhotometric Stereo for 3D Face Reconstruction Using Non Linear Illumination Models
Face recognition in presence of illumination changes, variant pose and different facial expressions is a challenging problem. In this paper, a method for 3D face reconstruction using photometric stereo and without knowing the illumination directions and facial expression is proposed in order to achieve improvement in face recognition. A dimensionality reduction method was introduced to represen...
متن کاملBinocular Photometric Stereo
This paper considers the problem of computing scene depth from a stereo pair of cameras under a sequence of illumination directions. By integrating parallax and shading cues, we obtain both metric depth and fine surface details. Casting this problem into the filter flow framework [16], enables a convex formulation of the problem, and thus a globally optimal solution. We demonstrate high quality...
متن کاملUsing Photometric Stereo for Face Recognition
This paper aims to review the technique of Photometric Stereo (PS), with specific application to face recognition. PS is a method to rapidly estimate the three-dimensional geometry of a face (or any other Lambertian-like object) using several images with an identical viewpoint but varied illumination directions. The contributions of this paper are to (1) summarise the pros and cons of PS compar...
